For all of you who have asked I have finally completed my Caterpillar Fringe Bracelet tutorial. You can find it on my site here for $15. And for those of you who don’t know what a Caterpillar Fringe Bracelet is, it is this –
It is very fun and soft to wear and not nearly as complicated to make as it appears. I hope all of you who chose to buy the tutorial enjoy creating your bracelet as well as wearing it.
I just wanted to share something I saw on the Today show this morning and then again on the nightly news. www.ArmyofWomen.org This is a group looking to match up women with breast cancer researchers. These researchers are looking for healthy women and women who have survived breast cancer to volunteer for studies on ways to prevent breast cancer. This is a cause near to my heart and I hope that you will read the site, agree with the cause, and join me in signing up to help. Together we can make a difference.
Back in April I started an Esthiology program at Vici Aveda in Milwaukee. It’s been quite a trip. I have really enjoyed the program but my original “Oh, I’ll learn to do facials, it’ll be easy!” idea was far from the truth. This is a very tough program. The first 7 weeks is spent learning theory and how to give facials. The next 10 weeks are spent in the clinic floor doing what you learned in the classroom. I love it, but it is tough. This program has been so tough in fact that between homework and general fatigue I haven’t had time or energy to make beads, cook, or even post blogs.
Fortunately, I am almost done with the program. If all goes well I am scheduled to be done August 1st. That however may change. I have to have spent 600 hours in school AND done 277 hours worth of services in order to graduate. As of Aug 1 I will have the 600 hours so I have to make sure I have my service hours in so I can graduate.
If anyone in the Milwaukee area would be willing to help me out by getting a facial, brow waxing, or any other service I would be most appreciative. The number for school is 414.425.1700 and the address is 4111 South 108th St. You can find a menu of the services we offer here. I am VERY good. Ask for Lynn, they only want one person at any time to have a name so since there was already another Heather on the floor I use my middle name at school.
Ok, I’m done begging now, Back to more about school. We learned how to do 4 different types of facial and multiple variations of each of them. We learned head to toe body waxing (brazilian day was very interesting). We learned multiple body treatments, and of course we learned about makeup application. We did this all on each other so we got to know our fellow students VERY well (see comment about brazilians above). LOL We also did a lot of bookwork. We learned a lot of anatomy and physiology, learned a lot about the specific products in the Aveda line, and we learned a lot about many different ingredients commonly found in skin care and beauty products. Like I said, it was a very intense course.
After all of that work we were let loose on the unsuspecting public. LOL I felt pretty confident about my abilities when I started on the floor. Except for eyebrow waxing that is. Most everything I do if my client doesn’t like it can be washed off. Even most waxing I do is a matter of taking all the hair off. Eyebrows however matter what hair you take off and what you leave so those made me nervous. If I am a millimeter off on one side or the other on a bikini its not going to matter, on eyebrows however it is very noticeable. Fortunately I am more able than I initially gave myself credit for. I only had one client be unhappy with her brows, she thought I took to much off one side until I pointed out that the hair was there, it was just gray. Then she was no longer unhappy with me and just unhappy with her gray hair instead. At this point, I have now done over 60 sets of eyebrows and am no longer nervous about them.
I have had a number of people ask how I can stand to work on the crotches of total strangers when I do brazilian and bikini waxes. Honestly, I never even really see the anatomy I focus instead on the hair and its growth pattern. The rest of the parts are just parts that are there that I have to work around, its no big deal at all. Sorry if that disappoints anyone but there really is nothing lascivious about brazilian waxing. It is hot, sweaty, and tiring for the waxer and painful for the waxee. There is just no getting around it, when you are ripping hair out of an area with so many nerve endings as that it is going to hurt like hell.
As for the rest of the program, it is hard work but fun. I really enjoy meeting new people and on the rare occasion where I have a person who is just totally unpleasant, I can console myself with the fact that I only have to put up with them for about an hour so I pull up my big girl panties and deal with it. Soon I will be done with school and ready to work in the real world. I can’t wait!
In a previous post I rambled on about trying to decide what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, if you didn’t read it you can view it here. Well, I have made the decision. After a lot of phone tag I finally got in touch with the Vici Aveda school and after talking to the admissions officer and taking a tour I decided to attend the esthiology program there. There are two main reasons I chose them over the Martin’s school in Madison. Vici had openings in the April program where Martin I would have had to wait until June, Vici is also about $2000 less which is nothing to sneeze at.
So I have registered for school, and March 27th was my orientation. At orientation we got homework and a school supply list. I am such a nerd. I had the homework done Thursday night and got my supplies picked up on Friday. It is now Monday night and I start school tomorrow. My bags are packed, all I have to do yet is pack my lunch and I am set to go.
I am very excited about going back to school but less excited about having to get up at 5:30 in order to get to school on time. 🙂 So wish me luck, and I’ll be sure to keep you all updated about my adventures in Esthiology school.
As many of you know I was fired at the end of October. I haven’t had any luck looking for an administrative or office position so I am contemplating a total change in career path. Last Wednesday just for giggles I looked into going to cosmetology or dog grooming school.
There is a dog grooming school about half an hour away from me but they never responded to my requests for information so they are out. Then I looked at a mobile dog grooming place that would train me but he’s not looking to hire for a month, doesn’t like the fact that I am so far away (I told him the drive didn’t bother me, I’d been making a longer drive for 4yrs), and would rather hire someone with experience (which I completely understand). He did say he may call me in a month if he doesn’t find anyone before then. Needless to say I am not holding onto any hope for that one. LOL I also tried the Petco website to apply for a position at their Delafield store where they also train. They only have a computer application system and halfway thru the application it stopped working on me. I called the number for tech support they have on their site but the tech people told me to contact the store via the contact us link. I did that and they told me to call the tech number so obviously they didn’t bother to read the section of my email where I said the tech people told me to contact them. Ah well, I guess I really don’t want to work for a company where their customer relations people can’t be bothered to read inquiries.
Then we get to the ‘people grooming’ schools. 🙂 I emailed the Martin College of Cosmetology in Madison and about 10min later got a call. I ended up going to see them last Friday and I really think I am interested. Then Saturday I received an email from the Vici Aveda Institute in Milwaukee that I had emailed. I tried to call to set up an appointment to tour and so far the woman there and I have been playing phone tag.
I am most interested in the esthetician (skin care, waxing, facials, etc) program but am thinking about taking the nail technician program as well just because that would make me more valuable on the job market. Money is a concern because the skin care program is about $7000 and since I am out of a job that is a hard sum to come up with. The program is also full time days for 5 months so it would be hard to work part time to afford it too. Especially if I added the part time nail program at nights. Doing both programs would also make it very hard for me to work on my beads and Jewelry.
Needless to say, this is a hard decision to make. My husband told me that if this is what I wanted then he would find the money which is very sweet of him but I would rather not put the burden all on him. I guess this means I should get my fanny to work on my torch so I can make some things to sell 🙂
Anyway, I’m just rambling here to try to put my thoughts into print so I can try to figure out if this is what I really want. Not only is it a lot of money but its a huge time commitment if I find out I don’t like it. On the other hand I really like dealing with people and have an artistic flare so I could be very good at this.
I don’t really expect anyone to have any answers for me but if you want to give me an opinion I’d be happy to listen. Also, if you feel like buying some jewelry to help me pay my way I would be more than happy to sell some to you, just go here. 🙂 hehehe Thought I would throw that in there, after all if I’m not going to pimp my stuff who will?
I heard a term today that I haven’t heard before – Wedding Vegetables. I heard this term on the show ‘Top Gear’ and while I assumed it was a euphemism for a man’s groin I was compelled to look it up. According to the Urban Dictionary the wedding vegetables are –
A classy term to reference the entirety of one’s manhood. The term includes the penis, scrotum, and BOTH testicles; however it is acceptable to still use the term in the instance one may have just a single testicle.
I found this term and its definition to be very entertaining so I thought I would share it with all of you in hopes that it puts a smile on your face too. If you have any terms or phrases you want to be featured as educational tidbits just email me at email@example.com and I will feature them.
I hope this amused you as much as it amused me. Until next time, TTFN and ta ta for now 🙂
